Nathan ‘FluteBox’ Lee - Simply Amazing Show at Womad 2008
One of my most amazing experiences at Womad 2008
(we all have a few new artists that take our breath away, it’s the beauty of Womad); for me it was seeing Nathan appear on the Friday evening at the Big Red Tent with various other artists.
He plays Flute - but beatbox style, supported by a fantastic tabla player (Hanif Khan) and a traditional flamenco guitarist (whose name I didn’t catch), and some more of Nathan’s friends on stage.
I had my 10 year old daughter Zara with me (who is learning to play flute) but neither of us was prepared for what we were honoured to see, hear and feel. We had gone really early to get front of stage position, all we knew was this guy called Nathan was playing flute The tent was empty, just sound crew running around getting everything miked up.
Then Nathan wanders onto stage for his soundcheck with his big warm smile, as myself and friends leant on the crush fence, then he let rip warming up his vocals and letting the Flute fill the huge Red Tent, WOW!!!,
And this was only the warm up! His Tabla player & flamenco guitarist joined him on the stage and it just got better and better, by now people were starting to come over to see who was creating this great sound and style with his great FLUTEBOXING (beatboxing and playing the flute at the same time).
Once the soundcheck was completed, the stage fell silent and we eagerly waited for the full set. On their return we weren’t dissapointed, as the tent had filled to a good sized crowd, some had no idea what they were about to experience and enjoy, plus what seemed a good regular crowd who had heard him before and come back to seek out his beautiful sound and style of beatboxing.
Then the whole band returned…
This is a great video clip of Nathan above (but from a few months ago we believe; still, great to see him perform).
